The Slovenian government tendered on the European Economic Area the procurement of a system to monitor shipping traffic in Slovenian waters. On the basis of the tenders received, a contract was concluded with Sirius IT, Skipti’s subsidiary in Denmark. Hreinn Jakobsson, Chairman of the Board of Sirius IT, says the decision was extremely satisfying for the company. “The monitoring system, known as V-track, is designed to track all shipping traffic in a designated area, not unlike the systems used in air traffic control. The system meets all the standards set by the European Union for systems of this kind, and other Member States are already considering implementation of the same system, since there are clear rules that all the Member States with marine jurisdictions are required to monitor all shipping in their jurisdictions.”
At the present time the V-track monitoring system is being used by eight European countries. The system is easy to install and extremely user-friendly. The system communicates with satellites that receive data on the vessels’ position and transmits the information into the V-track system, where all authorised users have direct access to the data through a web browser interface.
